Poland has sought border guard help from Germany, Greece and Finland.
Concerns related to migration pressure from the east into Europe, have led authorities in Poland to seek border guard and police help from Germany, Greece and Finland to patrol its frontier with Belarus.
The decision has been confirmed by a senior government official, stressing that preparations to improve border protection in the Polish-Belarusian border, have already begun.
Preparations are underway and these are countries that are very experienced in border protection. Especially, for example, Greek experiences can be very useful.
The influx of migrants to Poland from Belarus has led authorities in Poland to consider closing all checkpoints with its neighbouring country, Belarus.
Announcing the new decision, Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski last month said that his country is studying the consequences that such a decision could bring to the country’s economy as well as local communities.
Sikorski said that Poland is again suffering from a surge in the number of migrants who are attempting to reach EU countries through Belarus. According to the Minister, this is happening under the control of Belarusian and Russian services.
It is particularly shocking that the functionaries of the Belarusian state instruct these people how to beat Polish soldiers and Polish border guards even when our guys are wearing bulletproof vests. This is completely unacceptable.
In the common borders between Belarus and the European Union, tens of thousands of migrants were recorded for a period from August until December 2021.
In November 2021, the Council of the European Union said that the influx of migrants came as a result of groups of migrants being escorted by armed Belarusian security forces towards the borders of the EU with the aim of forcing irregular entries.
Poland Again Under Migration Pressure
Figures from Deutsche Welle revealed that Poland is again under migration pressure. The same reported that more than 400 irregular entries from migrants who use Poland as their transit country to then head to other territories such as Germany and the UK.
However, at the EU’s external borders, a decrease has been registered in the number of irregular border crossing attempts in the first five months of this year, according to the statistics from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex.
According to Frontex, the number of irregular border crossing attempts in the EU, in the first five months of this year, declined by nearly a quarter, to nearly 80,000.
Frontex’s statistics revealed that the Western Balkans and the Central Mediterranean route saw the most significant decline in detections of irregular crossings among the major migratory routes, while the highest increases were detected at the Western African and Eastern Mediterranean routes.
