Award-winning Ghanaian band Kwan Pa is preparing to unveil their latest creative project, a musical drama film titled Sweet Palm Wine, set to hit cinemas across Accra on October 26. The film tells the story of a family of three who, due to economic difficulties in the city, return to their village. It captures the essence of Kwan Pa’s signature palm wine music, a genre that seamlessly blends highlife, jazz, and traditional Ghanaian rhythms.
As part of this project, Kwan Pa has crafted an exciting new soundtrack, also titled Sweet Palm Wine. The soundtrack, which drops on October 25, a day before the film’s release, includes nine tracks performed in the band’s iconic palm wine style. Featuring lyrics in English, Twi, Ewe, and Ga, the album includes Kwan Pa’s widely acclaimed EP Palm Wine Music, alongside a new track from band leader Asah Nkansah and producer Kojosteve.
“We wanted to create a musical experience that celebrates Ghana’s rich culture and heritage,” shared Asah, Kwan Pa’s bandleader. “Sweet Palm Wine brings together drama, humor, and our distinctive palm wine music to tell a heartfelt story about family, resilience, and love.”
Since forming in 2016, Kwan Pa has become a household name across Ghana and West Africa. Their energetic and melodic approach to palm wine music has won them accolades and opportunities to perform on major stages in places like Dubai, Moscow, and Qatar. Known for hits such as 5 Days of Christmas, The Kontomire Song, and Felix Cannot Dance, the band has earned multiple awards as Ghana’s best traditional band.
The film Sweet Palm Wine is produced by Wahala Entertainment, Kwan Pa’s record label, and directed by Wael H. Hakim. The star-studded cast includes veteran actors like Fred Amugi, Pascaline Edwards, Aaron Adatsi, Willie Chambers, Ricky Kofi Adelayitar, and Rosa K.O. Mensah. The film’s score weaves in Kwan Pa’s signature sound, along with original songs composed specifically for the movie.
“We’re thrilled to bring this musical journey to the big screen,” said Wael, the film’s director. “Kwan Pa’s music is truly the heartbeat of this film. Their palm wine style brings vibrancy and life to the story.”
Sweet Palm Wine will premiere at Silverbird Cinemas in Accra on October 26, and Kwan Pa’s soundtrack will be available digitally worldwide on October 25.
