Former Tottenham star, Mousa Dembele has announced he will retire from football later this year.

The 34-year-old Belgian has just a year left to run on his contract and Dembele has revealed he has no plans to renew.

He released a statement on Instagram saying: “Hi everyone, first of all I would like to thank everyone for the nice messages I have received.

“To cleap up, I haven’t stopped yet. I still have a year left on my contract. But I can already share that I will stop after this year is finished. Thank you.”

According to Belgian outlet, HLN,  Dembele rejected the offer of a new deal from Chinese Super League club Guangzhou.

Dembele joined Guangzhou in 2019 following seven years at Tottenham. He first played in the Premier League for Fulham but his best years came under Mauricio Pochettino in North London.

The Belgian midfielder became a fan favourite at Spurs and many have paid tribute to Dembele following news of his retirement.

Dembele made 249 appearances for Spurs, scoring 10 goals for the club in all competitions. He also won 82 caps for Belgium with his last appearance coming in 2019.
