Czechia’s capital, Prague, gained global recognition from the reputable travel guidebook publisher Lonely Planet as one of the “Top 10 Cities in the World,” reflecting the city’s rich history and distinctive architecture, making the city a must-see destination for 2024.
In the newly released Lonely Planet’s list, which thoroughly evaluated over 200 destinations to compile its annual list of the world’s most attractive cities, regions, and countries to visit, Prague secured the eighth position.
Prague’s allure lies in its charm, historical significance, and vibrant cultural scene, making it a top choice for travellers, particularly those from North America, explained Michaela Claudino, Czechia’s Director of Tourism for North America.

Claudino further emphasised that the recognition solidifies Prague’s position as a global tourism gem.
Lonely Planet’s recognition coincides with a surge in interest in Prague, solidifying its position as one of the world’s most unique destinations.
With architectural treasures such as Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, the Astronomical Clock, and Old Town Square, Prague boasts an enduring UNESCO World Heritage Status.
When exploring the heart of Europe, visitors can stroll through centuries-old cobblestone streets, immersing themselves in the city’s rich heritage. Meanwhile, they can savour the experience of underground bars renowned for serving famous Czech beers.
From traditional Czech cuisine, boasting thick soups, savoury sauces, and a variety of stewed and cooked vegetables and meats, to the renowned Pilsner beer, Prague caters to travellers of all tastes with a delectable culinary offering.
In the first quarter of 2023 alone, the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) reported a notable milestone, revealing that accommodation establishments in Czechia hosted a total of 3.8 million guests, with a year-on-year increase of almost 90 per cent in the number of international guests.
The country experiences an influx of visitors, especially during Christmas and New Year, with nearly 250,000 tourists visiting the city in 2022. The allure lies in the Christmas markets scattered throughout the city, particularly the main ones in the Old Town and Wenceslas Square.
Last year, in 2022, Czechia’s tourism income surged, surpassing the previous year by nearly CZK 51.2 billion.
The positive trend came after a decline in revenue from CZK 83 billion in 2020 to CZK 66.8 billion in 2021, which was significantly below the pre-pandemic level of CZK 167 billion recorded in 2019.
