The 28th edition of the South African Music Awards (SAMA28) is back in full swing and industry heavyweights are ready to celebrate musicians who have done exceptionally well in the last 12 months.

The red carpet was filled with the who’s who in the music industry, among the fan favourites in attendance were Sjava, Speedy, A-Reece, Shane Eagle and Sliq Angel.

Osama musician Zakes Bantwini leads the nominee’s list with a total of seven nominations. This follows Bantwini’s nod in the Record of the Year (ROTY) category announced last week for Osama with Kasango.

The 42-year-old’s album, Ghetto King, received nominations for Album of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Best Dance Album and Best Engineered Album.

While his two songs, Imali with Karyendasoul featuring Nana Atta and Osama with Kasango, are in the running for the Best Collaboration award.

Amapiano queen Kamo Mphela reigns as the only female nominated in the highly contested Best Amapaiono album category. She goes head to head with Mas Musiq, Mellow and Sleazy, Young Stunna and Focalistic.

Mphela who is currently out of the country, in Europe, is also nominated for Best Female artist along with Msaki, Reign Afrika and Shekhinah. Another female musician making waves with steady nominations is Msaki who bagged four nods.

The East London born singer-songwriter is also up for Best Adult Contemporary Album and Best Produced Album of the Year for her Platinumb Heart Open offering.

She will also be vying for the Best Collaboration gong for her effort with Da Capo titled No Rainbow.

“A job well done to all #SAMA28 nominees. Each artist has laboured to ensure that they produce exceptional bodies of work which have soothed and united us during particularly challenging times,” RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi

“The standard of this year’s submissions was impressive and presented a tough task for our panel of diligent judges. We wish all nominees good luck and look forward to celebrating them at our gala event”, said Sibisi.

This year the awards are scheduled to be taking place in Pretoria.
