South African Rapper, AKA’s Memorial Service Tickets Sold Out in Hours
Online tickets for the public memorial service of award-winning rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes were sold out within three hours on Tuesday after his family announced that his funeral would be private.
Forbes passed away on Friday night after a shooting incident that occurred outside Wish restaurant on Florida Road in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
The free tickets, which were posted on Webtickets from 1pm on Tuesday, were sold out just after 4pm on the same website.
In a press briefing and a media statement, which was released on Tuesday, the family announced that they would give the star a private send-off on Saturday.
Forbes’ father, Tony, said:
The Forbes family, who were joined by the musician’s girlfriend and rapper Nadia Nakai, made their first public appearance since his passing on Tuesday at a media briefing, which was held at Rockets restaurant in Bryanston, Johannesburg.
The mood was sombre, with the rapper’s mother and Nakai, who were dressed in black, sitting next to each other and sobbing as Tony delivered his speech.
Forbes senior also took the opportunity to thank the public for the support it has given them during this time.
“We want to acknowledge the outpouring of love that we have received since Kiernan’s passing. That love has been extended to our families, our colleagues and friends. It has really helped in terms of giving us comfort these past few days,” he said.

He added: “Kiernan was not just loved by us as a family. His talent shone through and created its own community. Of course, we know it as the Megacy, which extends to the nation at large and is not confined to Joburg. It is throughout the country and the close friends that he has have been by our side just like they have been by his side.”
Tony also condemned various reports that were speculating and accusing the star’s friends of being involved in his murder.
He mentioned:
The rapper, who had just turned 35 years old two weeks earlier, was due to perform at a Durban nightclub, Yugo, as part of his birthday celebrations on the night when he was gunned down just after 10pm on Friday.
His former manager, Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane, was also killed in the shooting and died shortly after paramedics arrived at the scene.
