Explaining the ‘EU Exit: ID Document Check’ app for EU Citizens Living in UK Post-Brexit

The government of the United Kingdom has provided detailed information regarding the ‘EU Exit: ID Document Check’ app used by citizens of the European Union and their families when applying for the EU Settlement Scheme.

The app can be used to complete the identity stage of EU citizens’ applications under the EU Settlement scheme, while it will check that applicants’ identity document is genuine and that it belongs to the applicant.

Applicants are urged to use either their biometric passport from an EU country, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway, or Switzerland, or their UK residence card with a biometric chip if they are non-EU family members of the EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens.

Those who use the app are required to scan their documents.

“Make sure your document can be read by the app. Look for the electronic passport symbol on your document. The symbol has a white circle with a horizontal line coming out of two sides on a black background. This symbol means that your document has a biometric chip and can be read by the app,” UK Government.

Another requirement for applicants is photographing their passport using their phone’s camera. It has been emphasized that the full page must be inside the frame, considering the two lines of numbers at the bottom of the page.

When ready to start checking the documents, applicants are required to click the “check now” button in the app, ensuring that they have removed any cases or covers from their documents and phone.

Citizens from the EU, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, or Liechtenstein might be eligible to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme so they can be allowed to continue living in the UK.

“The deadline for most people to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme was June 30, 2021. This deadline does not apply if you already have pre-settled status and you’re applying for settled status,” UK Government.

However, applicants or their families from the EU, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, or Liechtenstein are still able to apply if they or their family members were living in the UK by December 31, 2020.

They also must either meet one of the criteria for a later application deadline or have reasonable grounds for why they are applying now and not by the deadline or in the time since the deadline passed.

Since the UK got officially out of the EU, both territories’ citizens have been subject to different rules when planning to visit each other territories.
