Due to ongoing repair work, travel between Poland and Ukraine will encounter delays at major border checkpoints until mid-November.
In August 2024, Poland closed the Dorohusk checkpoint, located near Ukrainian Yahotyn, for essential repairs. This closure was followed by restrictions at the Shehyn checkpoint, which began today, August 26, at 9:00 am, Schengen.News reports.
The State Border Service of Ukraine announced that these repairs will continue for about a month and a half until mid-October, potentially causing significant truck and bus traffic delays.
According to the same authority, the Shehyni-Medica border crossing, situated between Shehyni in Lviv Oblast and Medyka in Podkarpackie Voivodeship, is open 24 hours a day and accommodates pedestrian traffic, which should remain unaffected by the repair work.
Top Less Busy Ukraine-Poland Border Checkpoints to Avoid Long Waits
Travellers looking to avoid delays should consider using less busy checkpoints. The longest queues are typically found at Ustyluh, Shehyni, Uhryniv, Rava-Ruska, and Krakivets.
Previously, on August 5, 2024, Poland closed the Dorohusk border crossing for repairs. Before this closure, approximately 300 trucks were queued, with wait times estimated at 10-12 hours. The repair work at Dorohusk is expected to continue until November 14, and truck drivers have been warned of potential traffic issues and increased waiting times.
In addition to this, on June 4, Polish protesters blocked truck traffic near the Rava-Ruska-Hrebenne checkpoint, halting trucks from leaving Ukraine. They allowed entry to Ukraine based on a schedule: 12 vehicles every 12 hours and four trucks with humanitarian aid each hour. This restriction started on February 20 and affected several border checkpoints, including:
- Medyka-Shehyni
- Dołhobyczów-Uhryniv
- Zosin-Ustyluh
- Korczowa-Krakivets
- Hrebenne-Rava-Ruska
- Dorohusk-Yahodyn
Temporary Ukraine-Poland Crossing Opens Amid Ongoing Border Repair Disruptions
Despite these recent closures of border crossings between these two countries, an additional crossing point, Korczmin-Stayevka, near Belz in the Lviv region of Ukraine, was temporarily opened on August 16-17 for the European Neighborhood Days. This measure was intended to improve cross-border cooperation and provide an alternative route for travellers during the repair period.
In addition, ongoing pavement repairs at the Hrebenne-Rava Russkaya border crossing are expected to cause possible disruptions until September 12. The State Border Service of Ukraine has noted that these repairs could further complicate travel plans in the region.
