5 Things You Didn’t Know About Cara Delevingne

0

Cara Delevingne, Vogue’s latest cover star, is emerging from a tumultuous period in her life. In an intimate and sometimes intense interview, the actor and model opened up to Chioma Nnadi about her struggles with addiction—and her commitment to healing. Here, in honor of Delevingne’s empowering new chapter, we’ve tallied up five things you might not have known about the 30-year-old It girl.

Her family tree is full of characters

Delevingne’s father, Charles Delevingne, is a property magnate; her grandfather Sir Jocelyn Stevens was once the owner and publisher of Queen magazine (now known as Harper’s Bazaar); and her late grandmother Janie Sheffield was once a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth II’s sister, Princess Margaret. Delevingne’s mother, Pandora Delevingne, worked as a personal shopper at Selfridges and is said to have helped dress the Princess of Wales for duty, while her godmother is Hollywood royalty and actress Joan Collins. “I grew up in the upper class, for sure,” Delevingne told Vogue in 2015. “My family was kind of about that whole parties-and-horse-racing thing. I can understand it’s fun for some. I never enjoyed it.” The same could be said of her education. When Delevingne was 16 years old, her parents enrolled her at the Hampshire boarding school Bedales, where Lily Allen and the Jagger children also attended. “Totally hippie-dippy,” Delevingne said of the aristo-arty school. “If you had a Chanel bag there, you’d be bullied.” Delevingne dropped out to follow in Poppy’s footsteps and pursue a career in modeling.

She helped to make full brows cool again

After Delevingne burst onto the modeling scene, tweezer sales began to decline, and her signature bold brows are supposedly to blame. In 2013, Google reported searches for “eyebrow plucking” as down from the previous year, while the terms “fuller eyebrows,” “Cara Delevingne,” and “statement brows” were on the rise. HD Brow kits and thickening treatments, too, saw a spike. “People ask me, ‘What’s your secret?’ ” Delevingne told Interview magazine earlier that year. “And I’m like, ‘You just don’t pluck them. It’s really simple.’ I mean, I do, obviously, a little bit, because otherwise I’d have a monobrow, but it’s just about keeping them wild, keeping them free and woolly.”

She credits her meteoric success in modeling in part to the power of social media

“I wouldn’t have done as well if I hadn’t had that. Not at all,” Delevingne has said. “In the ’90s, I wouldn’t have been a supermodel.” In the fall of 2014, Delevingne secured her place in Instagram history when she walked the Giles Deacon show at London Fashion Week and became the first ever to take a runway video selfie, documenting the moment for her millions of followers.

Her dreams of acting began in childhood

When she was 12, Delevingne was the drummer in a band called the Clementines, and it was around that same time that she asked her parents for an acting agent. Delevingne later recalled: “I wanted to be a Disney Channel star! I wanted to be Hannah Montana. They said no!” But Miley Cyrus’s on-screen acting persona wasn’t her only muse; Delevingne has also cited Jennifer Lopez as a longtime source of inspiration. “I just wanted to be like J.Lo when I started. The last thing I want to be is a model-slash-actress,” she told Vogue in 2014.

She and girlfriend Leah Mason, a.k.a. Minke, go way back

As Nnadi reports in her April cover profile, Delevingne and Mason—who have been dating for about a year—“first met as kids at Bedales, then lost contact before reconnecting at an Alanis Morissette concert 12 years later.” Earlier this week, Delevingne wished Mason a happy 32nd birthday on Instagram, charmingly adding, “Here’s to 20 years of knowing you.”
