A total of 2,562 Algerian nationals were deported from France in 2023, topping for the first time the list of nationalities that were removed the most out of the country for the year, leaving behind Albanians, who were the most deported nationality group since 2017.
According to the annual report published by the French Interior Ministry, deportation cases of Algerians have risen by 36 per cent since 2022. This nationality group has always been among the top five most deported since 2014.
Georgian nationals follow second, becoming the second-largest nationality for most deportations as those soared from 980 in 2022 to 1,642 in the one-year period.
Deportations Increased by 1.2%
Over 1,600 more people were deported from France last year, showing an increase of 1.2 per cent for deportations, which totalled 17,048.
The list of most deported nationalities groups consists of different countries of origin, from former French colonies in Africa to the Balkans and Eastern European countries. They accounted for more than half of all deportations for the year.
Although smaller in numbers compared to other nationalities, deportation cases among Turks were the highest – up by 141 per cent compared to 2022 levels. Due to such results, this nationality group, for the first time, made it in the list of top ten nationalities that were deported the most from France since available data exists (2014 to 2023).
Except for Algerians, Georgians and Turks, a spike in deportation cases was also noticed among Afghanis (37 per cent), Moroccans (16 per cent) and Tunisians (13 per cent).
Albanians No Longer Most Deported Nationality in France
After seven years of being the most removed nationality in France, Albanians have finally experienced a drop in deportation cases, ranking third among all the ten most deported nationalities.
Around 1,400 Albanians were removed from France in 2023, 36 per cent fewer than in the previous year and down by 55 per cent compared to pre-pandemic levels when a record number of deportations were evident (3,207).
In addition to Albanians, who saw the largest decrease in deportation cases for the year, Guineans and Romanians experienced fewer deportations in 2023, 32 and nine per cent decreases, respectively.
On the other hand, a minor drop of almost three per cent was noticed in deportations for Ivorian nationals. Guinness and Ivorian nationals are increasingly becoming less deported in France, as the data trend indicated.
