More than 28 million passengers were welcomed at Athens International Airport (AIA) last year, thus surpassing pre-pandemic levels performance by nearly ten per cent.
A total of 28,174,150 passengers passed through the Athens International Airport last year, accounting for an increase compared to 2019’s statistics, during which period some 25,57 million were registered.
Data released on Thursday revealed that in 2023, Athens International Airport statistics surpassed 2022 levels by 24 per cent during which year 22,728,668 passengers passed through this airport, and 2019 levels by 10.2 per cent, as reported by Greek Travel Pages.
At the same time, domestic international passengers exceeded 2022 levels by 18.9 per cent and 26.4 per cent, also surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 13.3 per cent and 8.8 per cent more specifically.
Athens Airport broke its 2019 record in November this year, as passenger traffic marked a notable increase each month. In October, the Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe) reported that AIA was among the European airports with the most significant increase in passenger traffic compared to the same month the previous year.
In December alone, the airport’s passenger traffic reached 1.86 million, or a 17.1 per cent increase compared to December 2022 and 13.6 per cent higher than December 2019 statistics.
Besides, last month, both domestic and international passengers surpassed the 2022 levels, with increases of 11.9 per cent and 19.4 per cent, and also exceeded the 2019 figures by 20.8 per cent and 10.7 per cent more specifically.
Last year, Athens International Airport had a total of 241,604 flights, thus accounting for a 13.2 per cent increase from 2022 and a 7.1 per cent increase from pre-pandemic levels.
Domestic and international flights were both higher last year, compared to 2022, with increases of 7.4 per cent and 18.1 per cent, respectively. In comparison to 2019, there was an increase of 10.5 per cent for domestic flights and 4.6 per cent for international flights.
The Bank of Greece (BG) revealed that in the first ten months of last year, Greece’s tourism sector significantly recovered from the damages caused by COVID-related restrictions.
In addition, the statistics from the central bank showed that tourism receipts for the period from January to October exceeded all travel receipts in 2019.
Back then, Greek Travel Pages (GTP) reported that cumulative travel revenue for January-October 2023 reached €19.6 billion, accounting for a notable increase of 14.7 per cent compared to 2022’s same period statistics.
