Copenhagen Airport (CPH) reached an important milestone on its road to recovering air traffic after exceeding 100,000 passengers on two consecutive days in July.
According to a recent airport report, the desire to travel by air throughout the summer holidays remains strong, revealing that July 2023 stood out as the most bustling month since 2019, accommodating 2,833,969 travellers in total.
“The two busiest days of travel were Friday, July 14 and Sunday, July 16, when 101,225 and 100,013 passengers respectively passed through the airport,” the report reads.
Data provided by CPH airport also show that apart from the two peak days, there were ten additional days in July when passenger figures exceeded 95,000. In response to this increased demand, the airport has expanded its workforce by over 200 personnel, in addition to the 1,000 individuals hired last year.
As Chief Commercial Officer of Copenhagen Airports Peter Krogsgaard explains, issues related to air traffic controllers in France posed considerable challenges, leading to disruptions in travel schedules spanning both northern and southern Europe.
Regarding flights bound for EU destinations, 94 per cent of travellers have started travelling again, though are fewer flights from Asia and China than pre-COVID.
CPH figures further revealed that once again, London claims the top spot on the list of the ten most sought-after travel destinations for the month, with approximately 172,000 passengers.
In pursuing sunnier climates and an escape from Denmark’s historically wettest July, Spain takes the lead, accumulating a substantial count of 450,000 passengers during the first two months of summer.
Moreover, a number of Spanish destinations have notably gained popularity surpassing their pre-COVID levels. In July, Màlaga and Palma achieved indices of 111 and 106, respectively, compared to the 2019 figures.
Based on these data regarding preferred charter travel destinations, Greece stands out as a favourite too. Out of the total 290,000 travellers journeying to Greek destinations during June and July 2023, a significant 180,000 chose pure charter flights. Within Greece, Crete reigns supreme as the most favoured and sought-after destination.
As of May 2023, Copenhagen Airport continued to show robust performance, welcoming a total of 2.4 million travellers. As a result, a fresh milestone was achieved on May 21, with a new single-day record of 96,000 passengers served.
In addition, this July, a Clean Cities Campaign (CCC) study analysed shared transport and zero-emission travel choices across 42 EU cities. Among these cities, Copenhagen emerged as the top-ranking eco-friendly transport city.
