Denmark Implements New Financial Obligation for Sponsors of Accompanying Family Members

0

The Danish government will introduce new requirements for family members of residents from the Faroe Islands, who, from September 2 and on, will have to document that their sponsor in the Islands can support them.

According to a press release by the Danish Immigration Services, all applicants in this category are subject to this requirement, and only those who have residence permits under the Sports Agreement are excluded from the requirement.

“All first-time applications submitted on September 2, 2023, or later are subject to the changes. The permit will state whether it is a condition for your residence permit that the sponsor can support you. The requirement for support will, in these instances, also apply if you apply for an extension of your residence permit,” the press release reads.

In addition, the requirement will not apply to those who have filed their applications for residence permits in the Faroe Islands before September 2, 2023. Moreover, for those who already have a residence permit as an accompanying family member to a sponsor in Faroe Island and their permit has been granted prior to this announcement, the requirement to prove their sponsor can financially support them does not apply to them in case of wanting to extend their permit.

In more detail, spouses, partners or children under the age of 18 of a person who has been granted a residence and work permit in the Faroe Islands are eligible to apply for a residence permit under the accompanying family member claims.

Spouses or cohabiting partners in Faroe Island need to have approximately €4,654 income each month in order to prove that they can support the accompanying family member financially, while this amount is even higher (€5,336) for spouses or cohabiting partners that have a child under the age of 18 travelling with the sponsor to the Faroe Islands.

As for children under the age of 18, the sponsor needs to have a monthly income of €3,796 while another €427 is added for each additional child, and a maximum of four children is allowed.

“You must submit the sponsor’s current employment contract in the Faroe Islands. If the sponsor is already working in the Faroe Islands, you must also submit the sponsor’s paychecks for the last three months,” the official website explains.

Accompanying family members in the Faroe Islands who obtain a residence permit are allowed to work during their stay as well as stay in the Danish territory for as long as the permit is valid. Those who have been living on Faroe Island for over two years and have a permit which can be made permanent may reside outside there for up to 12 months, and in case of residing outside for longer than one is allowed to, their permit will be automatically ended.
