France Accounts for 64.5% of Negative Schengen Visa Decisions for Algerian Applicants

Algerian nationals have filed 239,927 visa applications to French consulates in 2022, and 64.5 per cent, representing 115,807 visa applications, were refused. These results make France as the country to have refused the highest number of visa applications by this nationality for the year.

Schengen Statistics also show that France is the main recipient country for Algerian visa applications, as it has approved a total of 110,090, accounting for 57.8 per cent of all positive decisions.

As per multiple entry visas issued (MEVs), those reached a record of 33,689 or a share of 45.9 per cent of the issuance rate, followed by 26,103 MEVs issued to Algerian applicants by Spanish authorities and 8,023 issued by Italian consulates, with 55.8 per cent MEVs issued share.

In general, the top three countries to have received the most applications from Algerians and, consequently, to have approved and declined the most visa requests for 2022 are France, Spain and Italy.

These three countries account for 91.9 per cent of all applications filed by Algerians, with a total of 360,407 applications out of 392,053. More specifically, Algerians filed 293,927 applications to French embassies, followed by 102,656 in Spanish embassies and 17,824 submitted to respective embassies for an Italian visa.

Additionally, the same countries account for most positive applications issued to Algerians – 176,512 or 92.3 per cent of all visas issued, while 91.1 per cent of all denied applications were also made by these three countries.

In detail, 110,090 Algerians received a positive response on their visa application by French authorities, out of 239,927 that placed a request – representing a 64.5 per cent rejection rate, while the same was lower for Algerians that applied for a Spanish visa as 55 per cent of applications were approved, and 38 per cent of the applications received a negative response, accounting for 56,479 approved applications and 39,944 denied visa requests, respectively.

In addition, the rejection rate of Algerian visa applicants by Italian consulates was 43.4 per cent, with 7,738 applications out of a total of 17,824 that were submitted, to be refused. The issuance rate, on the other hand, stood at 55.8 per cent, with 9,943 applications being approved.

Algeria has climbed one position in the list of countries that have filed the most applications for visas in 2022 – being ranked 5th, up from the 6th position recorded in 2021. One position might not seem as much but the number of applications filed in the one-year period is significantly higher. While statistics for 2021 show that 140,212 applications were filed by Algerians, in 2022, this number rose to 360,407.
