Frankfurt Airport (FRA) experienced a surge in the number of passengers, with 5.8 million in September of this year.
This remarkable number of passengers in the airport marked an increase of 18.2 per cent compared to the same month last year.
According to the airport’s official website, the pandemic’s effects are still evident in the number of travellers, as the passenger levels in September remained 13.9 per cent below the levels achieved in the same month in the pre-pandemic period (2019).
In terms of destinations, those located in the European continent, particularly, experienced impressive double-digit growth rates last month, with a 14.2 per cent increase compared to the same month in 2019 and a 12.1 per cent increase to the same month in 2022.
Regarding intercontinental traffic, it is pointed out that traffic to and from Asia in September of this year had bounced back to 90 per cent of its pre-COVID-19 levels.
FRA has also presented insightful data comparing passenger counts and airport movements in 2023 so far with pre-pandemic levels.
This data underscores a significant recovery, with approximately 44.5 million passengers from January to September, representing a remarkable 23.9 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2022 and a recovery of 82 per cent compared to January-September 2019 figures.
During the first nine months of 2023, FRA served a total of around 44.5 million passengers. This represented a surge of 23.9 per cent compared to the same period last year versus a 17.8 per cent decline compared to the first nine months of 2019.
Moreover, the data indicated that in September of this year, the airport saw a total of 39,653 aircraft takeoffs and landings. This is 16 per cent higher than the number in the same month the previous year, which means there were about 5,500 more aircraft movements this year.
Furthermore, when we look back to the same month in 2019, the airport has recovered to reach 85 per cent of the aircraft movements it had back then. This growth shows a positive trend in the airport’s recovery.
Frankfurt Airport has implemented various measures to enhance its capacity in response to the continuous growth in passenger numbers. Clearly, this decision has made a significant impact, as the number of passengers during the summer months was substantial.
