A Georgia national who was previously banned from entering the Schengen Area has escaped from the Border Guard officers upon his arrival in Poland.
As the authorities have explained, the Georgian landed at the Gdansk Airport together with another person, who was also a national of Georgia and banned from entering the area.
Once the Border Guards at the airport were informed that two Georgians banned from entering the Schengen Area were on the flight, they located them at the terminal.
However, before those responsible at the airport were able to deny them entry into Poland, the Georgians jumped over the barricades and started to run away.
While the Border Guard officers were able to catch one of the Georgians and detain him, the other one ran away, raising concern as the authorities did not reveal whether this person represents a threat to society.
According to Wyborcza, this situation is an embarrassment for the Border Guard as on the same day this happened an evaluation of Schengen inspectors was carried out to see if they are capable of dealing with different situations, including irregular entries into the country.
A ban from entering the Schengen Area in most cases applies to those who have broken the law. Wyborcza said that they asked the Maritime Unit of the Border Guard whether the Georgian who escaped could present a threat, but they did provide a clear response.
The data contained in the Schengen Information System are classified.
Moreover, Wyborcza noted that when asked if the public should know that a dangerous person has escaped and now is in the area, the spokesperson refused to provide any further information, saying he is not “a psychiatrist”.
While the authorities have yet to provide information on the matter, Wyborcza said that it managed to find out unofficially that the Georgian national who escaped the police is 23 years old and on the day when the escape took place he was wearing an olive tracksuit and an orange vest.
Wyborcza also stresses that information obtained by it shows that the Border Guard was not prepared for such a situation, saying that due to officers’ unreadiness, the Georgian national was able to successfully escape from the terminal and leave the airport with nowhere to be found.
On the other hand, the responsible authorities have said that the Border Guard and the police are carrying out an intensive search to catch the Georgian national as soon as possible.
