In an effort to address the current migration challenges, the German and Moroccan authorities have reached an agreement on a migration partnership.
The agreement reached between the two countries is a result of the talks held by the German Federal Minister of Interior Nancy Faeser during her visit to Rabat in October, and its main aim is to reduce irregular migration while at the same time encouraging legal labour migration.
Commenting on the reached agreement, Minister Faeser said that Germany and Morocco have opened a new chapter with one another. She further stressed that the agreement is in the common interest of both countries.
I am pleased that we have now been able to build on this and agree that we reduce irregular migration and strengthen legal labour migration in common work structures. This is in our common interest.
In addition to the above-mentioned, Minister Faeser emphasised that the country wants to facilitate the return of all Moroccans who do not have the right to remain in the country.
At the same time, Minister Faeser noted that Germany is in need of foreign workers in various sectors across the country and thus wants to promote controlled labour migration of qualified Moroccans who can take up jobs in the country.
We want to consistently enforce the repatriation of people without the right to remain. And on the other hand, we want to recruit qualified people who we urgently need in many areas of our economy.
Dr. Joachim Stamp, the Federal Government’s Special Representative for Migration Agreements, who led the interministerial delegation in finalising the partnership between Germany and Morocco, also commented on the matter.
Expressing his optimism about the agreement, Stamp said that they are committed to working together, with the primary goal of the two countries being the curbing of irregular migration and the enhancement of legal pathways for labour migration.
I am pleased that we have agreed on comprehensive migration cooperation with Morocco, in which we will work in trust and friendship on how we can reduce irregular migration and strengthen legal routes into the labour market for the benefit of both countries.
As the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community explains, the bilateral working structure that has been established by Germany and Morocco will facilitate close cooperation between the two countries.
The same highlighted that regular meetings between the authorities will continue to be held, during which measures to enable controlled migration and facilitate the return of Moroccan nationals without the right to remain in Germany will be discussed.
