Germany has announced plans to launch a new online platform that will provide information on the procedures for applying for German citizenship once the new citizenship law becomes effective.
The country will also launch an advertising campaign that aims to share more information that can be often missed when applying to become German citizens, SchengenNews reports.
According to I Am Expat Germany, the new advertising campaign and the online information website will give detailed explanations of the requirements and steps that need to be followed when applying for German citizenship in line with the new law.
The launch of the platform and the advertising campaign were confirmed by Member of Parliament Alabali-Radovan (SPD). In an official letter, the MP said that the platform would inform all foreign residents in the country about the requirements and procedures for naturalisation in both German and English.
Moreover, it was revealed that the website, together with the campaign, will be launched on June 27, 2024, on the same day when Germany’s new dual citizenship law enters into force.
Government Will Also Open Social Media Accounts to Share Information on Citizenship
In addition to the above-mentioned, the German government will also open new social media accounts where it will share information about the naturalisation process.
As I Am Expat Germany explains, the social media accounts will share applicants who have successfully completed all the procedures, and at the same time, they will encourage those eligible to apply for citizenship.
So far, citizenship applicants in Germany have been mainly relying on unofficial channels. However, as soon as the new platform and social media accounts are opened, they will receive all the needed information for the citizenship application.
What Will Change When Germany’s New Citizenship Law Enters Into Force?
Once Germany’s new citizenship law becomes effective, an important change that will take place is that citizens of third countries who hold a German residence permit will be able to apply for naturalisation after having resided in the country for five years.
In some certain cases, naturalisation will also be possible after three years. In addition, in line with the new citizenship law, foreigners will not have to renounce their original citizenship, meaning that they will be able to hold dual citizenship.
The period of residence requirement for citizenship for foreign parents of children who were born in Germany will also be shortened from eight to five years.
Several other changes will take place and some new requirements will be introduced.
