During August 2023, the number of people staying in Germany’s accommodation establishments dropped by 1.9 per cent compared to the same period in the previous year, indicating a slight change in travel patterns.

In August of this year, German accommodation providers recorded a total of 57.1 million overnight stays coming from both local and international guests, marking a 1.9 per cent decrease from August last year and a 1.3 per cent compared to 2019.

According to Destatis, the Federal Statistical Office in Germany, in August 2023, there were 47.6 million overnight stays by domestic guests, a 3.4 per cent decrease compared to the same month the previous year, August 2022. In contrast, when looking back to August 2019, there was a 1.0 per cent increase in the number of overnight stays.

The number of overnight stays by guests from abroad increased by 6.3 per cent to 9.5 million compared to the same month last year but was still 11.4 per cent below the pre-crisis level in August 2019.

Destatis also provided insights into the trends of overnight stays during the month of August from 2019 to 2023. In August 2020, there were 49.5 million overnight stays, marking a 14.35 per cent decrease compared to August 2019, when there were 57.8 million overnight stays.

However, by August 2021, the number had recovered to 55.9 million, showcasing a notable increase within just a year. This data highlights the impact of the pandemic in August 2020, with a significant decrease in overnight stays compared to the preceding year, 2019.

Furthermore, the data from Destatis revealed that May was the only month where overnight stays went up compared to 2019, with a 5.3 per cent increase. In 2019, May recorded 44.5 million overnight stays, whereas in 2023, this figure increased to 46.3 million, underscoring the month’s significant growth in the number of visits.

In contrast, April stands out as the month with the most significant decrease, underscoring the pandemic’s impact from 2019 to 2020. In April 2019, there were 40.3 million overnight stays, but in April 2020, the number dropped dramatically to just 4.3 million, which marks an enormous 89.33 per cent decrease.

These statistics show that Germany’s tourism is striving to reach 2019 levels. Previously, SchengenVisaInfo.com reported that the country’s travel and tourism sector is reaching up to 95 per cent of pre-pandemic levels, with a high number of international travellers expected to enter Germany during the winter holiday season.
