Italy has promised to take 6,000 non-seasonal Indian workers in 2024, with the application system for Indian workers scheduled to open in April, as the Migration and Mobility Agreement between India and Italy regulates.

According to the “Planning of legal entry flows in Italy for Foreign Workers” decree that was set in 2023,  the quota for the 2023-2025 period is set at 151,000, SchengenVisaInfo reports.

The Indo-Italian agreement points out that a total of 30,000 workers will be selected to work during the three-year period in the EU country, which is threatened by labour shortages across various sectors.

10,000 Seasonal & Non-Seasonal Indians to Work in Italy in 2024

A total of 6,000 non-seasonal and 4,000 seasonal workers from India will be recruited in Italy for 2024, showing that the trend of hiring such workers during the three-year period will increase gradually.

Starting from 8,000 workers in 2023 to peak at 12,000 in 2025, Italy offers temporary employment for Indian nationals across different periods of the year, while non-seasonal workers can opt for permanent or regular employment.

According to the Agreement between the two countries, Indian students pursuing their academic careers in the EU country can stay in Italy for up to one year to exercise their profession after graduating.

While in 2024, a total of 134,000 work quotes were set for Italy, around 151,000 third-country nationals can work in the country. In 2025, this figure is even higher, enabling some 165,000 non-EU citizens to work in the country.

Ministry of External Affairs data in Italy reveals that there are currently 157,000 non-resident Indians in the country, while 45,000 people of Indian origin live there. Data suggests that over the last two decades, the Indian population in Italy has risen by ten times.

Italy Receives Indian Workers, as Unemployment Rates in India Drop to 3.1%

Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale was not very fond of the new agreement, as he raised concerns about the high unemployment rates in India.

India will send 12,000 non-seasonal workers and 8,000 seasonal workers to Italy every year. The level of unemployment in India is SO BAD under the Modi Govt that we’re now exporting Indian laborers to other countries.

On the other hand, According to the country’s statistics ministry, India’s unemployment rate in 2023 stood at 3.1 per cent, recording the lowest level in three years. While in 2022, the unemployment level stood at 3.6 per cent, the situation was even worse in 2021 when 4.2 per cent of the people of working age in the country were unemployed.
