Agropoli municipal police officers discovered that an Asian man was working in a store in Italy without a residence permit.
The same authority and inspectors from the Department of Labor in Salerno found him during a routine check in the store, SchengenVisaInfo reports.
As local media explain, the police have taken fingerprints for identification purposes. After the inspection, the person was sent to the Salerno police station, where the process for his deportation from the country began.
He has been given seven days to leave the country. Also, he has been reported to the Judicial Authority for violating immigration laws.
Italy Sees 65% Drop in Immigrant Arrivals in 2024
Since the beginning of 2024, Italy has witnessed a significant decrease of 65 per cent in immigrant arrivals compared to the same period in 2022. This marks the fifth consecutive month of notable decline when compared year-on-year.
Despite various measures and decrees implemented by the Italian government to prevent immigration, there was a 50 per cent increase in immigrant landings in 2023 compared to 2021 figures, reaching 150,000 individuals.
Data from the Italian Ministry of the Interior on December 29, 2023, showed that 155,754 people landed in Italy, up from 103,846 reported in 2022. Regarding the total number of landings this month, around 17,000 were unaccompanied minors.
9 Arrested by Italian Police for Smuggling Migrants Through Balkan Route
At the beginning of this month, Italian authorities also arrested nine people from Pakistan suspected of smuggling migrants along the Balkan route.
The detained individuals are accused of organizing the illegal entry of many people from their own country. They also face charges of robbery, causing injuries, and attempting extortion.
During the incident and the following day, one of the victims was forcibly held in an apartment in Siena’s centre. It was later discovered that this was an attempted kidnapping to demand more money for his journey to Italy.
