Italy Urges Residents and Tourists to Seek Shelter Indoors Amid Extreme Weather

0

Italian authorities have alerted that 15 cities across the country are recording temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius, warning even young residents to stay indoors between 10:00 and 16:00.

According to Euronews, the north and centre of Italy are the most affected by the high temperatures, while the weather in the country’s southern region is more likely to be typical for this time of the year.

Red alerts are also in place for Rome and Milan, two of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations, with temperatures expected to reach around 37 degrees Celsius. Similarly, tourists to Naples, Florence and Genoa are advised to avoid sun exposure during this period.

The list of cities with red heat alerts includes:

  • Turin
  • Bologna
  • Bolzano
  • Brescia
  • Frosinone
  • Latina
  • Palermo
  • Perugia
  • Rieti
  • Verona

Anticyclone Nero is found responsible for these temperatures, as the weather forecasting website iLMeteo.it has revealed, and it has also caused high humidity in the country, making the weather feel very sticky. Some have even described it as “unbreathable”, while at night, the weather can feel muggy, and sleeping in a well-ventilated area is recommended.

Italians are highly advised to stay hydrated, avoid exercising during the day, and find other ways to stay well during hot temperatures, such as wearing sunscreen that is SPF30 and higher, as well as wearing hats and comfortable clothing to stay cool.

Consuming alcohol is not recommended these days, and people should opt for fresh food, fruits and vegetables and rather eat four small meals instead of three bigger ones.

Just recently, Portugal issued recommendations for tourists with extreme weather threats this summer season, as the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) also alerted for an increased risk of fires.

“Avoid direct exposure to the sun, especially between 11 am and 5 pm. Use sunscreen with a factor equal to or greater than 30 and renew its application every 2 hours and after bathing at the beach or pool,” one of the recommendations reads.

Travellers are advised to purchase travel insurance when travelling during such conditions, as it protects them from unexpected expenses that can occur due to natural disasters, as well as other inconveniences such as medical emergencies, lost items, and cancellations. In such cases, travellers who have travel insurance can have their money fully or partially reimbursed, making the damage evidently less severe.

Based on experience, reputation and customer responses, companies such as Europ Assistance, AXA Travel Insurance, DR-WALTER, Mondial Care, Mutuaide, and Allianz Travel Insurance offer some of the best deals for purchasing insurance.
