Italy’s third largest airport, Milan Bergamo Airport, has handled a breaking 54,571 passengers in a single day, prompting SACBO, the airport’s managing company, to further invest in enhancing the airport’s facilities and services for the benefit of its passengers and airline partners.
The airport has registered over 13.1 million passengers in 2022, once again confirming its significant role in the country’s aviation landscape, and reflecting its increasing popularity and importance as a key transportation hub.
The airport’s reach extends far beyond Italy’s borders, serving a diverse network of 140 destinations in over 40 countries.
“We have been working continuously to ensure the airport’s infrastructure development allows us to handle the ever-growing number of passengers we are experiencing, ensuring we can remain the leading choice for those travelling to and from the Lombardy region,” Director of Commercial Aviation, SACBO Giacomo Cattaneo stressed.
Anticipated for summer 2025, Milan Bergamo’s second phase of development is set to encompass a substantial 7,400 sqm expansion, effectively enlarging duty-free, security, and boarding hall areas. This ambitious project will effectively double the airport’s duty-free space, offering travellers an enhanced shopping experience.
Moreover, the development will incorporate the installation of 14 state-of-the-art C3-type security scanners, streamlining the screening process for passengers. As a result, travellers will no longer be required to remove liquids and laptops from their hand baggage, making the security checkpoint more efficient and passenger-friendly.
Last year, the eagerly-awaited railway connection between downtown Milan and Milan Bergamo Airport received its final approval, paving the way for enhanced transportation options for travellers. The construction of the connecting tunnel, which will seamlessly link the airport’s arrivals hall to the new station, is now underway.
Once completed, the station will boast four platforms, ensuring a reliable, sustainable, and innovative transportation service from the airport to the bustling city center. This railway link is set to significantly improve the overall accessibility and convenience for passengers, making their journeys smoother and more efficient.
With the final works projected to finish by the beginning of 2026, the crucial railway service will be fully operational just in time for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
During this prestigious event, the Lombardy Region is anticipated to be at the forefront, and improved transportation connectivity will be vital for accommodating the influx of visitors and participants.
