Almost 5.8 million people travelled to, from or via the Netherlands’ Schiphol Airport in September of this year, representing a significant increase compared to the same month in 2022 and 2021.

According to the Schiphol Airport’s official website, among the nearly 5.8 million passengers in September, approximately 3.7 million either departed from or arrived at Schiphol, while 2.1 million engaged in transfers at the airport.

There were more than a million unique transfer passengers, who were counted twice in accordance with the international counting method: once as an arriving passenger and once as a departing passenger.

Regarding the most popular destinations, in September of this year, there were 4.1 million passengers who either arrived from or departed to European destinations, reflecting a 12 per cent increase compared to the same month in the previous year.

Spain claimed the title of the most favoured destination, attracting nearly 258,000 local departing passengers during September 2023. Following Spain, the United Kingdom received over 235,000 passengers.

Looking beyond Europe’s borders, 1.6 million passengers travelled to or from intercontinental destinations outside of Europe, marking a ten per cent increase from 2022.

The airport’s official website has provided current flight statistics, revealing that the total number of flights at Schiphol in September reached 40,625, reflecting a significant ten per cent increase from the same month last year. Among these, 33,334 flights were directed for European destinations, while 7,291 were bound for intercontinental locations.

The same source has also revealed the differences in the number of passengers and commercial flights between this year, the previous year and 2021.

According to this data, September of this year saw a total of 5,777,367 million passengers, compared to 5,196,931 million during the same month last year and 3,370,436 million in the same month in 2021.

This marks an 11 per cent rise compared to the same month in the previous year and an impressive 71 per cent increase compared to the figures from the same month in 2021.

In September of this year, the airport handled 40,627 commercial flights, reflecting a 9.71 per cent increase from the 37,027 flights in 2022 and a substantial 35.3 per cent increase from 2021 when the airport managed 30,019 flights.
