Nationals of Morocco will now have the opportunity to undergo training in their country to work in Italy’s Sicily seasonally.
The training of Moroccans for the purpose of allowing them to take up jobs in Sicily has been made possible through a Memorandum of Understanding, SchengenVisaInfo reports.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the labour groups of Sicily and Morocco – the Sicily Foreign Workers Association, the Human Solidarity Consortium, and the General Union of Moroccan Workers – on March 28, 2024.
In line with the agreement reached by the groups, Moroccan workers will be able to undergo vocational training. Once their training in Morocco is over, they will be eligible for seasonal employment in Sicily, more specifically in companies in Bronte and Valledolmo.
Deal Aims to Prevent Exploitation of Foreign Workers
By giving such an opportunity to Moroccans, the authorities want to prevent the exploitation of workers.
While the entire training and employment process will take time, the General Union of Moroccan Workers will make sure to support and train the training of Moroccan workers, which will be offered by Migrant.Work.
As ANSA explains, all Italian companies are eligible to take part in the initiative. The same stressed that Moroccans will be offered all the training they need.
Commenting on the deal, the head of the Foreign Workers Association, Paolo Ragusa, said that they want to offer migrants alternatives for safely reaching the country for work purposes.
The councillor for social policies in Sicily, Nuccia Albano, also commented on the matter. The latter said that foreign workers who enter Sicily for work will be integrated into the companies more quickly as they will be qualified.
Migrant.Work will offer training from foreigners and its website allows Italian employers to enter all their preferences and find workers that meet their needs.
As explained by Migrant.Work, each type of training has a different duration. The same also disclosed that they offer first aid officer training, fire training, training for electrical workers, and training for maintenance workers, among others.
High Number of Applications for Agriculture Work in Italy
A high number of applications for agricultural work were filed by foreign workers on “click day”.
Due to shortages that the country is dealing with, Italy will accept more than 89,050 workers this year. The majority of the workers will be issued a six or nine-month visa, which will permit them to legally reside and work in Italy.
