Slovenia Celebrates a Tourism Milestone: 1.6 Million Overnight Stays in September, Marking an 8% Year-on-Year Increase

Data from the Statistical Office of Slovenia revealed that September of this year recorded approximately 668,000 arrivals in tourist accommodation establishments and nearly 1.6 million overnight stays.

According to the data, this number indicates a significant eight per cent increase in overnight stays in September of this year compared to the same month in 2022.

Domestic tourists accounted for one-quarter of the total overnight stays, with 149,886 arrivals and 405,019 overnight stays, reflecting a 5.3 per cent increase compared to the same month in the previous year.

In contrast, foreigners made up the largest share of tourists this month, with 517,878 arrivals and almost 1.2 million overnight stays, showing an 8.9 per cent increase compared to the same month last year.

Domestic tourists spent the most overnight stays in health (spa) resorts, where the average length of stay was 3.6 nights. Foreign tourists mostly stayed in mountain resorts, where the average length of stay was 2.3 nights.

In the context of tourists’ favourite destinations, domestic tourists preferred to spend most of their nights in Piran, Izola, and Ankaran municipalities.

On the other hand, when it came to international tourists, a significant one-fifth of their overnight stays were spent in Ljubljana, which also happened to be the most visited location for all tourists.

Regarding the origin of the guests, tourists from Germany comprised the majority of overnight stays, accounting for 23 per cent or 267,500 overnight stays in September 2023, with the majority of these stays occurring in the municipality of Bovec.

Besides Germany, the percentage of tourists from other countries contributing to the total overnight stays in September 2023 were as follows: Austria at 9.2 per cent, Italy at 5.7 per cent, Czechia at 5.5 per cent, the United States at 4.8 per cent, and the United Kingdom at 4.6 per cent.

Furthermore, hotels remained the preferred choice for accommodation, with tourists contributing to 689,200 or 43 per cent of the total overnight stay, making hotels the primary accommodation option.

Private accommodation options, such as rented rooms and dwellings, came next at 23 per cent, while camping sites comprised 14 per cent of the overall stays.

Compared to the same month in the previous year, an increase in the number of overnight stays was evident across various types of accommodations.

Specifically, hotels reported a seven per cent increase, private accommodations such as rented rooms and dwellings saw a 14 per cent increase, and camping sites saw a five per cent increase in overnight stays.

In addition, the Statistical Office unveiled that Slovenia, in the first nine months of this year, recorded 5.180.261 tourist arrivals, which marks a 5.1 per cent increase when compared to the period last year when the country registered 4.927.460 million tourist arrivals.
