The airports of the Aena network in Spain, which includes 46 airports, have surpassed 2019 levels in terms of passenger traffic.

More than 283 million passengers travelled through these airports in 2023, representing a 16.2 per cent increase compared to 2022 and 2.9 per cent more than in 2019.

Of those, 282.3 million were commercial passengers. More than 189.7 million passengers travelled on international flights, and 92.6 million travelled on domestic flights.

In addition, Aena airports operated 2.4 million aircraft movements (8.5 per cent more than in 2022) and transported 1.07 million tonnes of freight (7.9 per cent more than in 2022).

The airports that recorded the highest number of aircraft movements and travellers are as follows:

  • Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas (60.2 million)
  • Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat (49.9 million)
  • Palma de Mallorca (31.1 million)
  • Málaga-Costa del Sol (22.3 million)
  • Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández (15.7 million)
  • Gran Canaria (13.9 million)
  • Tenerife Sur (12.3 million)
  • Valencia (9.9 million)

All the airports mentioned above saw increased passenger traffic compared to 2022.

Maurici Lucena, Aena’s Chairman and CEO, emphasised that these figures in air transport are crucial for Spain’s economic and social development.

We should all congratulate ourselves on these results. Airlines which, like Aena, suffered the harsh consequences of the pandemic are now transporting more passengers than ever.

In December alone of 2023, nearly 20.2 million travellers passed through Aena airports, representing a 12.8 per cent rise compared to December 2022. In the same month, airports operated 176,368 aircraft movements, which is 11.3 per cent more than the previous year.

Aena airports reached the highest number of passengers in August (over 29.8 million), followed by July (over 29.7 million) and September (over 25.7 million).

Despite the growth in passenger traffic, the Aena airports network has reported increased net profits throughout 2023.  Aena’s net profit in June, including exceptional financial items, reached €607.7 million, compared to €277.5 million in the same period of 2022 and €559 million in 2019.

The Aena network manages 46 airports and two heliports in Spain. Furthermore, it operates 23 airports in Brazil, Mexico, Jamaica, and Colombia, as well as London-Luton Airport.
