Stay Safe in the Heat: Portugal’s 10 Health Tips for Tourists and Locals

The Portuguese government has issued official recommendations for residents and tourists to protect themselves from hot temperatures as the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) alerts there is an increased risk of fires.

According to the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), residents should look for fresh and airy-conditioned environments for at least three hours during the day, increase water consumption, and avoid alcoholic beverages.

The authorities also recommend using sunscreen and applying it every two hours, while avoiding direct exposure to the sun, especially during the afternoon hours, is also highly advisable.

“Wear loose, opaque clothing that covers most of the body, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with ultraviolet protection,” one of the recommendations reads.

Outdoor activities that require great physical exertion, such as sports and leisure activities, are discouraged, and people, especially children, the elderly, the chronically ill and pregnant women, are advised to stay inside.

Moreover, parents should make sure that children are hydrated and remain in cool and airy environments, while children under six months should not be exposed to direct sunlight.

The risk of fires spreading in Portugal is increasing, although temperatures are expected to drop in the following days.

ANEPC has pointed out that August 5 was the fifth day with the highest number of fires recorded in the month – a total of 80 ignitions, while the highest number of occurrences – 113, was recorded two days later.

“In Nelas, four people were removed from their homes in Senhorim as a precaution due to anxiety, having stayed overnight in a support area of the municipality. They’ve already returned home. And in Ourém, three children and a person with reduced mobility were also removed from the village of Carvalhal de Baixo as a precaution and have also returned to their homes,” the commander said at a press conference.

The national commander of Civil Protection, André Fernandes, noted that 20 fires were recorded today alone, with 389 operators and 100 vehicles being arranged to put down the fires. Around 18 occurrences are under surveillance and follow-up actions across the country, with two fires in Nelas and Ourém being highlighted.

Travel insurance can protect travellers from the unexpected expenses that occur due to natural disasters and wildfires. In addition, many other inconveniences, such as medical emergencies, cancellations or lost items, can be partial to fully reimbursed, so it is highly recommended to always purchase travel insurance before travelling.

Based on experience, reputation and customer responses, companies such as Europ Assistance, AXA Travel Insurance, DR-WALTER, Mondial Care, Mutuaide, and Allianz Travel Insurance offer some of the best deals for purchasing insurance.
