Countdown Alert: Denmark Reminds Brits – Residence Permit Deadline Nears on December 31!

The Danish authorities have reminded British citizens and their family members covered by the Withdrawal Agreement between the EU and the UK once again that the deadline for submitting residence permit applications expires at the end of 2023.

British citizens and their family members who do not already hold a residence document in Denmark under the Withdrawal Agreement must submit an application – SIRI is not going to send out individual information letters.

According to the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI), all individuals who meet the requirements under the agreement, including those who had legal residence in line with the EU rules and free movement before December 3, 2021, can apply for a residence permit in Denmark.

The deadline for those eligible officially ends on December 31, 2023, with the authorities stressing that the extended deadline applies only to Brits who have not previously submitted an application.

Individuals who already have a residence in Denmark under the Withdrawal Agreement should not apply again. The extended deadline applies to individuals who have not previously submitted an application.

SIRI has further explained that the extended deadline also applies to those who submitted a residence application after the original deadline expired and who received a rejection of their application.

Regarding Brits who were refused application processing due to submitting their applications too late, SIRI said that they could require their case to be reopened.

If you previously received a rejection to have your application processed by SIRI and the Immigration Appeals Board due to submitting the application too late, you can, based on the extended deadline, ask SIRI to have your case reopened. The same applies if you have not appealed the rejection to the Immigration Appeals Board.

The previous deadline for Brits in Denmark to apply for a residence permit was set on December 31, 2021. However, since many failed to reach it, the authorities decided to extend it until the end of this year.

Brits started to be subject to additional rules in the U following Brexit since they were no longer considered as EU citizens.

Following stricter rules, data has shown that the number of Brits moving to Denmark considerably decreased in 2021 compared to the previous 15 years.

According to Denmark Statistics, only 854 Brits moved to Denmark in 2021, representing a significant drop compared to 2020, when 1,405 Brits moved to Denmark.
